Jainism: A Sustainable and Healthy Lifestyle

July, 2024 by Kartik Maniar
Jainism is an ancient religious and philosophical tradition that originated in India. It is known for its strong emphasis on non-violence (ahimsa), truth (satya), non-possessiveness (aparigraha), and other principles that promote ethical and sustainable living. Here’s how Jainism relates to sustainability:
  1. Ahimsa (Non-violence): Ahimsa is the cornerstone of Jainism and involves refraining from causing harm to any living being, whether it’s humans, animals, or even plants. Jains follow a strict vegetarian diet and avoid any actions that harm living creatures. This commitment to non-violence aligns with modern sustainability goals, as it promotes the preservation of biodiversity and the reduction of harm to the environment.
  2. Vegetarianism: Jains are typically vegetarians, and some are even vegans. By abstaining from meat and animal products, Jains reduce their environmental footprint. Animal agriculture is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, and water pollution, so adopting a vegetarian or vegan diet can significantly reduce one’s ecological impact.
  3. Minimalism and Aparigraha: Jainism teaches the principle of aparigraha, which involves limiting one’s possessions and material desires. By practicing minimalism and avoiding excessive consumption, Jains reduce their impact on the environment. Consumerism often leads to overuse of resources and the generation of more waste.
  4. Conservation of Resources: Jains are taught to use resources judiciously and avoid wastefulness. This attitude toward resource conservation is closely related to modern sustainability practices, which aim to reduce resource consumption, promote recycling, and minimize waste.
  5. Sustainable Agriculture: Jains historically practiced sustainable agricultural methods. They used organic farming techniques and were careful not to harm even small insects in the process. These practices align with contemporary sustainable agriculture principles that prioritize soil health, biodiversity, and reduced chemical use.
  6. Environmental Stewardship: Jainism promotes a sense of responsibility for the environment and emphasizes the importance of preserving natural resources for future generations. This mindset is in line with modern sustainability efforts to protect and restore ecosystems.
  7. Water and Energy Conservation: Jains are encouraged to use water and energy efficiently. This aligns with sustainable practices that seek to reduce water and energy consumption to mitigate environmental impacts.

It’s important to note that Jainism’s approach to sustainability is deeply rooted in its religious and philosophical beliefs, and Jains have been practicing these principles for centuries. In the context of contemporary sustainability challenges, Jainism offers valuable insights and practices that can contribute to a more sustainable and harmonious relationship between humans and the environment.

In Jainism, eating before sunset is a dietary practice known as “choviar.” This practice aligns with Jain principles of non-violence (ahimsa) and spiritual discipline. It involves consuming the last meal of the day well before sunset, typically around 48 minutes before sunset. Here’s a discussion of this practice and its potential health benefits:

  1. Ahimsa (Non-violence):One of the core principles of Jainism is ahimsa, which entails non-violence or non-harming. This principle extends to all living beings, including tiny microorganisms. By eating before sunset, Jains aim to avoid the consumption of food at a time when insects and other small creatures might be active, reducing the risk of unintentional harm to them. This practice reflects their commitment to non-violence in daily life.
  2. Spiritual Discipline: Eating before sunset is considered a form of spiritual discipline. It aligns with the Jain concept of controlling one’s desires and attachments to worldly pleasures. By adhering to a strict schedule for meals and fasting during certain periods, Jains exercise self-control and maintain focus on their spiritual goals.
  3. Improved Digestion:Eating before sunset allows for better digestion. Having a meal well in advance of bedtime ensures that the body has adequate time to digest the food properly. This can reduce the likelihood of digestive discomfort, acid reflux, and other digestive issues that can arise from late-night eating.
  4. Weight Management:Consuming your last meal well before bedtime may contribute to better weight management. Late-night eating is associated with weight gain because the body’s metabolism tends to slow down during sleep. Eating earlier allows the body more time to metabolize and burn calories before resting.
  5. Better Sleep:Eating late at night can disrupt sleep patterns, leading to poor sleep quality and disturbed sleep. By eating before sunset and giving the body ample time to digest, people may experience better sleep quality and overall restfulness.
  6. Reduced Risk of Lifestyle Diseases:Eating late at night has been associated with an increased risk of lifestyle-related diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular problems. By avoiding late-night meals, Jains may reduce their risk of developing these health conditions.
  7. Mindful Eating:The practice of eating before sunset encourages mindfulness around mealtimes. Jains are taught to be conscious of their food choices and eating habits, which can lead to healthier food choices and portion control.

It’s important to note that while eating before sunset may have potential health benefits, individual dietary practices and their effects can vary. What works best for one person may not be suitable for another. Additionally, Jains typically follow a vegetarian or vegan diet, which is associated with various health benefits, including reduced risk of chronic diseases.

In summary, eating before sunset in Jainism is a practice rooted in principles of non-violence, spiritual discipline, and health consciousness.
